JKOM #1

I am back home from the first round of the Jeep series is Vernon New Jersey. Things were a little different with the new format of Dual Slalom and new promoters, but the weekend was good. Turn out was pretty good from the riders and EC did an amazing job building the course. I am hoping DS will look cool on TV compared to Y cross, but there are mixed reviews.

There were lots of events and concerts this weekend. You gotta give it to 48 Straight for putting in the effort to make the weekend fun for spectators. They had Indy Cross for anyone to come and race down a short track with big berms and a few jumps to compare their times to the pros and they had an AC/DC cover band Hells Bells (an all girls cover band who rocked). They even had a Paul Mitchel set up for free hair cuts and product.

Racing was fun and as slalom lends its self to tight races, there were close finishes. I had an ok day with a slide out in the finals where I took second to Kathy Pruitt. I was bummed that a little slide out took me out of the race, but then I saw Brian Lopes and JD Swanguen do the same thing, so I didn't feel so bad, it was a tough turn for a lot of people. Lisa Myklack finished third and new to the race scene, Canadian slope style pinner, Stephanie Nychka took fourth.

In the men's Cody Warren was on fire, riding so strong JD Swanguen finished second, Jared Rando third and Petr Hanek fourth. With over a second advantage Brian Lopes who held the Paul Mitchel leaders jersey slid out in THE slippery corner, and was out first round.

So there you have it. First round is over and next stop is Canyons Utah, Sept 20-21. Remember it's open qualifier so any one can race.

I start school today, so I am off to class. I will be heading to our National Mountain Bike Series Finals this weekend in Brian Head Utah.

Back on the Map

Sorry I have been off the map for a while these days, it's been crazy. I have been back home training in the desert heat. It's been a nice break, but I am ready for the the jeep race this weekend. I am really looking forward to it. The JKOM series is one of my favorites, they have always been pretty good about taking care of their athletes. This year it is open qualifiers with a slalom format and first stop is good old Diablo Freeride park in Vernon New Jersey. I will update in a few with more news.

Colorado

Well I am back in Colorado for what seems to be a yearly visit to all my Boulder buddies and an escape from the desert heat. I raced this weekend at the Mountain States Cup,"Blast the Mass"in Aspen. The promoters put on a cat 1 UCI race. This gives US riders the opportunity to get UCI points to race the world cups and lucky us, it affords a nice pay out too.

The promoters of this series are pretty tuned in and are really looking to give back to the riders, I always enjoy racing them. There wasn't much of a turn out for the women unfortunately, so low that it didn't qualify for UCI points in 4-x which means they don't have to award the price money that you would have earned if there were enough riders. But Mike the good guy that he is payed us anyway. Pretty cool cat. I thought I would mention it and put the word out there for everyone to come give the series a try.

On to the racing...the DH was a new course the best I have seen for this venue. So fast!!! I had a pretty good run and took the win with Rachael Bauer in second and Darian Harvey in third. In the Mens Aaron Gwin took the win by a tiny .17 I think over Leov and then Sam Blenki in third. Pretty cool for Gwinn since rumor has it he just got his training wheels off in January. I also heard he will be hitting up some world cups, so keep an eye out!!

In the 4-X Ross Milan won, but Chech ride Petr Hanek gave him a good fight. I took first followed by Neven Steinmetz.

In other racing Joanna Petterson and Kieran Bennett won the NMBS DH and Mikey Haderer won the DS

That's about it for now. I am off to Vermont for our US Champs!

Home

It's been a week home since the NMBS race in Utah. I have been getting some good training in and some therapy on my hand and shoulder. I gotta say though after my ride this morning I am ready for some cooler temps!!! I finished in 104 degrees and it was only 9:00!!! It's been really nice at home though catching up with friends and family. I think I will head up this weekend to Colorado for the Mountain Stated Cup race in Aspen. I'll keep ya posted!

Jeep King of the Mountain

I have been getting a bunch of questions on the Jeep series from people at the races, so here is some more info....

Jeep 48STRAIGHT : HOME

We are pleased to announce the new Jeep 48Straight Summer Mountain Bike Series. Last fall, Jeep King of the Mountain and The Ski Tour merged. The results were incredible! The events took on a festival like atmosphere by combining Headline music acts with World Class skiing and snowboarding. Music acts like: Michael Franti, The Roots, Swollen Members, Dinosaur jr., Slightly Stoopid, were brought in to make the nights as exciting as the days and creating an amazing weekend. 48 straight hours of entertainment! We are taking this 48Straight concept to the summer. We will be hosting Three Dual Slalom mountain bike events and combining them with some of the biggest music acts around.

Schedule:

The 2008 Jeep 48Straight Summer Mountain Bike Series

· Event #1 August 22-24 Diablo Freeride Park, Mountain Creek, New Jersey

· Event #2 September 19-21 Canyons, Utah

· Event #3 October 24-26 The Madonna Inn, San Luis Obispo, California

Format & Field Size:

The fields will be limited to a total of 100 competitors: 75 men and 25 women. The qualifier will be held on Friday (final weekend schedule subject to change). 16 men and 8 women will advance to the finals. There will be 4 men and 2 women that will be pre qualified to the finals (based on soon to be published criteria). For these riders, the qualifier day will merely be a seeding run as they will be pre qualified into the finals on following day. The results from the first event will be used to objectively pre qualify 4 men and 2 women for the second event. After the 2nd event, the top 4 men and top 2 women, overall, will be pre qualified for the final event.

Prize Money & Points:

Each event will pay $5000 for the win. Overall Series Champions will receive a two year lease on a Jeep (or cash equivalent) as well as an additional bonus of $5000 from Paul Mitchell! The Men’s race will pay down to 16th and Women’s race to 8th. The break down is as follows:
